Arsonists torch bus at Muslim centre

The fire was started outside The Islamic Centre, hours after CCTV was vandalised

Arsonists set fire to a minibus belonging to a Muslim community centre in what police believe was a targeted hate crime

Officers were called to The Islamic Centre in Newton Heath, Manchester, at about 01:20 BST.

Two men dressed in black were seen running from the scene.

The fire was started just hours after vandals ripped CCTV cameras from the Regent Street building’s walls, at about 23:30 BST on Friday.

Insp Chris Hadfield, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “We believe the two incidents are linked and that the theft of the CCTV cameras was meant to help them carry out their arson attack on the minibus without being recorded.

Fortunately there are several other cameras that capture the rear of The Islamic Centre, where the attack took place.

We are investigating the possibility that this is a targeted hate crime

Is the UK unusually fond of lamb and potatoes?

Rack of lamb

The US ambassador to the UK says he is fed up of being served lamb and potatoes. Does this imply the British have an exceptional taste for the dish, asks Mario Cacciottolo.

If you’re playing host to Matthew Barzun, Washington’s man in London, don’t cook him lamb and potatoes. He claims to have been served the meal 180 times since his arrival to British shores last autumn and he’s had quite enough now, thank you very much.

“There are limits and I have reached them,” he told Tatler magazine.

The implication is that Britons have an exceptional taste for the dish.

In fact, on the international scale, the UK’s annual per capita lamb consumption of 4.7kg is decidedly mid-table at best, according to Eblex, the UK’s organisation for lamb (its figures also include a small helping of goat meat). That’s well behind Greece’s 12.8kg and the biggest consumer of them all – Mongolia, with 45.1kg.

But it’s way ahead of the US, which consumes a mere 0.4kg per capita each year of lamb. Writing in the Times, Philip Delves Broughton points out that almost half of Americans have never even tried it.

Lamb recipes you’ll always be happy to eat

There are many more at BBC Food

It’s not so much that Britons eat a lot of lamb and potatoes. It’s that the meal has long been regarded as a sumptuous feast.

The Cheltenham Chronicle in August 1919 carried a report of how a woman appearing before magistrates – for reasons not disclosed – gave her husband regular helpings of “roast lamb peas and potatoes” as proof of how well she had treated him. He, by her account, was unappreciative of her efforts, which the magistrates referred to as luxurious.

As far back as 1896, the Lichfield Mercury was encouraging cooks with recipes that involved covering lamb and various vegetables with “a good many new potatoes – as many as required” with which to layer on top of the stew.

Perhaps this should have been explained to Barzun. He’s been getting served what the Brits think is a fine dish, one designed to impress such an illustrious visitor, unaware that they’ve actually been making him sick of the sight of it.

MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace would happily swap places with the ambassador.

“Lamb is often used in North African dishes but I prefer the traditional method,” he says. “It’s a fatty meat, so I can understand why some people don’t like it, but for me that’s what makes it so delicious. I’d have it as my last meal.”

Still, things could be worse for Barzun. He must hope his diplomatic skills are never needed in Ulan Bator.

Police officers hurt in chase crash

The cars hit the central reservation and ended up on the embankment after colliding, police said

Two police officers have been injured in a crash during a high speed chase on the M6 Toll motorway in Staffordshire.

The patrol car they were in collided with an MG that was driving at about 90mph between junctions T6 at Weeford and T8 for Brownhills, police said.

The officers were not seriously hurt and the car driver, 23, injured his leg. All three were taken to hospital.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

He was also detained for failing to stop, police said.

The Central Motorway Police said it began following the MG ZR at about 09:45 BST when it was seen driving “erratically”.

A rolling road block was put in place and the second time officers tried to stop the car it collided with the police BMW, it said.

Both cars crashed into the central reservation and ended up on the embankment.

The southbound carriageway of the motorway remains closed between T6 and T8.

S Korea minister sent knife threat

Han Min-koo, now defence minister, formerly served as the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff

Officials in South Korea are investigating a parcel containing a knife and a threatening letter sent to the country’s defence minister.

The parcel, which also contained a white powder later identified as flour, was found by a delivery man.

It was addressed to Han Min-koo and a letter inside accused the minister of bringing “a fire cloud of a nuclear war to the Korean peninsula”.

A possible suspect had been seen on CCTV footage, Yonhap news agency said.

The man, in his 20s or 30s, was seen sending the parcel via a delivery service at a convenience store, the agency said.

“We are open to every possibility, including the suspect’s possible linkage to North Korea,” it quoted a defence ministry official as saying.

The Defence Ministry said that the knife had the words “Han Min-koo” written on one side and “execution” written on the other.

The letter was signed by the “International Peace Action Corps”, an organisation officials said did not exist.

North Korea and South Korea remain technically at war in the wake of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

The heavily-fortified demilitarised zone separates the two nations and ties remain tense.

Seoul wants Pyongyang to end its nuclear weapons programme, but talks on the issue have been stalled for years.

North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests in recent months, prompting warnings from Seoul.

Wozniacki beats Sharapova in US Open

Caroline Wozniacki thrilled the New York crowd with a stunning win over fifth seed Maria Sharapova at the US Open.

The Dane, seeded 10th, won 6-4 2-6 6-2 on a stiflingly hot afternoon at Flushing Meadows.

Wozniacki, 24, is through to her first Grand Slam quarter-final since 2012, and plays Italy’s Sara Errani next.

It means so much to me – it’s been a bit up and down for me this year, said Wozniacki.

It’s a new year and I’ve gotten older, and hopefully a little wiser. I feel good. I feel comfortable when I play out there.

The crowd was amazing today. It’s just so much fun to play out there again on the big court

Roared on by the majority of spectators on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 2009 finalist looked back to her best as her superb defensive ability proved too much for Sharapova in a pulsating final set.

And she said that training to run the New York Marathon in November was aiding her game, adding: “I think it will help me a lot. Today was a tough battle out there. It was humid; it was hot; I had to change my dress.

That rarely happens. It was just soaked. Definitely it’s helping, because I felt fresh out there and I felt like I could keep going

Wozniacki has slipped from the very top of the game after finishing as year-end world number one in 2010 and 2011, but in recent months there have been signs of a resurgence

A title in Istanbul, a first top-five scalp in three years against Agnieszka Radwanska and twice taking Serena Williams to three sets suggested the Dane could again be a major threat, and beating Sharapova at a Grand Slam is confirmation of that.

The Dane made a terrific start, serving well and attacking the net as she moved 3-0 clear, but when Sharapova hauled her way back to 4-4 it seemed her heavier hitting would hold sway.

Sharapova has not been at her best in New York, however, and two wild forehand errors gave Wozniacki the first set.

It was hardly a crisis for the French Open champion, who leads the standings for three-set wins in 2014 with 17, and she dominated the second set with two breaks to level after nearly two hours.

With the temperature soaring, the heat rule was brought into effect and the players given a 10-minute break to leave the court.

Sharapova received a time violation on her return as umpire Marija Cicak said she had taken “way too much time”, and early in the final set it was Wozniacki who complained that the Russian was too slow between serves.

Fired up and moving brilliantly behind the baseline, Wozniacki grabbed control of the match when she broke to love in a stunning rally at 2-1, chasing down everything Sharapova could throw at her until the Russian dumped a volley in the net.

The momentum was with the Dane and she would not flinch as her biggest win in recent memory loomed

Attacking the Sharapova serve once more, Wozniacki stepped in and hammered a backhand winner to convert her first match point.

I thought she played really well, said Sharapova. She made me hit a lot of balls. That’s always been her strength. But she did extremely well today.

She’s a great retriever, especially in these types of conditions. I just felt like I maybe went for a little too much

Real Sociedad 4-2 Real Madrid

Real Sociedad came back from two goals down to seal a famous victory over European champions Real Madrid.

The visitors, who were without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, were superb in attack and led thanks to early goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale.

But Sociedad exposed their defensive deficiencies to level through Inigo Martinez and David Zurutuza.

Zurutuza struck again to give the home side the lead before Carlos Vela fired in to seal the victory.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has invested heavily this summer to further improve the attacking prowess of his side, with the big-money signings of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

And the results of this were clear to see, particularly in the first half, as Madrid swept into a 2-0 lead.

Kroos’ corner was converted by the head of Ramos after five minutes before Bale nutmegged his marker on the edge of the box and fired in to double the advantage six minutes later.

They could have had more with Marcelo twice going close and Ramos again showing his aerial prowess with a headed effort that just missed the target.

But as good as Ancelotti’s side were at one end, they were poor at the other and were ruthlessly exposed by a clinical Sociedad side.

Martinez narrowed Real’s advantage by tapping in at the back post after a corner had been flicked on by Xabi Prieto before Zurutuza capitalised on some more bad marking from the away side to power a header home from Alberto De la Bella’s cross.

With the momentum behind them, Sociedad forced home their advantage in the second half as Madrid crumbled.

Zurutuza completed the turnaround by showing good determination to beat Dani Carvajal to a low cross from skipper Prieto and turn the ball in.

And Carlos Vela secured the victory by slamming a shot on the turn into the roof of the net.
